Can Food Be Healthy And Tasty?

Can food be healthy and tasty?

The simple answer? Yes!

Fundamentally I believe there is a huge misunderstanding that healthy means plain and dull for the tastebuds.

This most likely started back when bodybuilding became popular in the 50s & 60s where it was (and still is) common for competitors to eat the typical chicken, veg & rice.

Thankfully things have changed: flavours from all corners of the globe have swept into almost every nation meaning that we can walk into almost any shop & find seasoning, spices & herbs from a very wide variety of sources.

This means that with not much effort we can turn the boring into brilliant.

Adding a dash of paprika or cumin to the rice, letting the chicken marinade in a smoky BBQ dry rub and having the veg steamed with a squeeze of lemon juice really makes the tastebuds tingle.

What is key to remember is most food comes with its own taste and this can become very familiar all too soon. Don’t become miserable at mealtime due to a lack of curiosity and playfulness in the kitchen.

Use what you already know and apply it to the new foods you try out.

Do a little research into what flavours go with your chosen foods.

Or if you’re feeling like a pro, go with the flavour and/or smell as you’re cooking.

With the ability to throw some ingredients into the slow cooker and leave it on low while you’re out during the day, it’s never been easier to get a home-cooked and nutritious meal on the go.

Take your time and remember with seasoning you can always add more but it can be difficult to remove it.

Try new things and take some inspiration from cookbooks, recipes online or cultures you’ve visited in the past. Some of the best food I’ve made was from copying from others – take 95% of the hassle out of the equation!

Plan out what you want to make, get the ingredients & throw some fun music on while you’re having a go.
