I am a practicing Midwife with over 11years experience working within the hospital and Community setting.
As a fully insured qualified aerobics instructor, I hold the central YMCA qualification in Exercise to music and level 3 certificate specialising in teaching Antenatal and Postnatal exercise.
The benefits of having both qualifications are that with my knowledge of pregnancy and the early postnatal period, exercises are safely adapted throughout your pregnancy and re introduced postnatally.
My interest in teaching ante/postnatal classes started when I was pregnant with my second daughter, who is now 5.
I was aware of only 2 types of classes available to do in pregnancy - yoga and aquanatal. I attended yoga and found the whole experience to be very relaxing, calming, focusing on breathing & gentle poses - I really enjoyed it - but it never gave me the same buzz as aerobics.
I never got round to aquanatal as I never fancied myself bobbing up and down in a cossy! I felt for me, dry land classes would be preferable, but I never found a suitable class.
After I had my baby I was keen to get back into shape - again no suitable postnatal classes where baby could come as well.....I didn't fancy leaving her in a creche when she was so little.
This is when I had my Eureka moment!!
It occurred to me that if I felt like this, other mums in Sheffield must feel the same. I decided to pursue a career in Exercise with the sole aim of delivering fun, effective informative antenatal & postnatal exercise classes to the many women, who like me enjoy the buzz of exercise and don't wish to give it up in pregnancy & wish to return to exercise following the birth. The classes are carefully structured to incorporate all elements of a good programme.
As a midwife I see many women who complain about backache & pelvic pain - thinking that its normal in pregnancy - its not! start becoming aware of the importance of adopting good posture, how to sit properly, move from standing to sitting, sitting to standing, getting out of bed, rolling over in bed etc........... because if you become more aware & follow core postural exercises it will prevent the aches and pains becoming worse and for some of you prevent it starting in the first place. You can help yourself.
Postnatally many women are keen to return to exercise quickly but it can be a daunting prospect to exercise with a baby in tow!! Don't worry they love it - take a look at the photo's. The key is to feed lots before you come!
The 6 week postnatal course keeps you focused on improving fitness and you will see the benefits.
I continue to develop and create new ideas for the classes. I attend many courses to ensure I am fully up-to-date.
For I while now the postnatal feed back has been the same "Kate can you do a follow on course?" Finally I can say Yes - due to demand fun fitness hour will be starting in September.......I'm really excited it will be great. Babies - 9mths welcome.
PLEASE NOTE YOU MUST HAVE ATTENDED THE 6 WEEK COURSE OR ARE AT LEAST 4 MONTHS POSTNATAL AS THE CLASS WILL INCLUDE AEROBICS, CIRCUITS, INTERVAL TRAINING, CONDITIONING & ABDOMINALS.
Look forward to seeing you.
